Friendship is a bond of trust that stands strong even in difficult times, so it is essential to choose the right people as friends.
Every year, on the first Sunday of August, people around the world celebrate International Friendship Day, dedicating this day to the importance of friendship. Friendship is akin to a trust during challenging moments, prompting us to exercise great caution when selecting our friends. The qualities of true friendship can be understood through the tale of Shri Ram and Sugriva in the Ramayana.
In the epic Ramayana, Hanuman Ji played a pivotal role in forging the friendship between Shri Ram and Sugriva. During their initial encounter, Shri Ram inquired why Sugriva, a king, was residing in the jungle.
Sugriva revealed that his elder brother, Bali, had turned against him. Although they were once on good terms, a demon entered their kingdom, and Bali pursued the demon to defeat it. Being a formidable warrior, Bali showed no mercy to his foes, and I followed them.
Both Bali and the demon entered a cave, and I ventured in after them. After some time, blood began to flow out of the cave, leading me to believe that Bali had slain the demon. Fearing for my own life, I returned to my kingdom.
The people of the kingdom assumed that I had vanquished Bali, making me their king. However, some days later, Bali returned alive and mistook me for an adversary when he saw me as the king.
Bali forcefully took my wife, and I sought refuge in the jungle to protect myself.
Upon hearing Sugriva’s account, Shri Ram assured him of his help.
Initially, Sugriva harbored doubts about trusting Shri Ram. He pondered how Ram could defeat the powerful Bali and aid him.
Observing the uncertainty on Sugriva’s face, Shri Ram declared, “Sugriva, I am your friend now. A true friend possesses six virtues: empathy in times of sorrow, efforts to alleviate your friend’s grief, guidance away from the wrong path, trust during dealings, well-wishes for your friend, and unwavering support during trying times. These qualities define a genuine friend, and you can consider me as one.”
Sugriva found trust in Shri Ram’s words. Subsequently, Sugriva pledged to help in the search for Sita. Both friends vowed to support each other and resolve their respective problems.
The Friendship of Shri Ram and Sugriva teaches us a valuable lesson: We must exercise caution in choosing our friends, as friendship serves as a steadfast pillar of trust and support during difficult times. A good friend stands with us through adversity and lends a helping hand.
