Like the fan base of Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC characters, James Bond films of Tom Cruise and Daniel Craig in the domestic audience watching Hollywood cinema, a somewhat similar but completely different craze for action hero Jason Statham has also been created in India. . Five years ago, his encounter with the prehistoric giant shark fish made the film ‘Meg’ a box office blockbuster, and then it was announced that a sequel was going to be made. Like the previous film, this time also the film is based on a novel but the danger is three times more this time. Because these giant fish, which usually live alone, have now learned to hunt in groups. The layer that separates the earth’s ocean from the underworld has been broken. All the creatures of the time of dinosaurs have also gone to the earth with these fishes.
The story of the film ‘Meg 2’ starts directly with Jason Statham’s character Jonas Taylor this time. He is seen taking photographs of these misdeeds on a ship dumping contaminated chemicals in the sea. When it comes to getting caught, he jumps from this ship in the middle of the sea, miles away from the earth. It turns out that he now works in the same lab he was last called to help with in an emergency. The laboratory is now run under the leadership of Minway Zhang’s son. Minway’s granddaughter Meiying has grown up. And, in the meantime there has been a piercing intrusion in the lab. A routine exploration of the deep sea suddenly takes a dangerous turn when prehistoric fish come to the surface from an illegal excavation of the underworld.
The writers of the previous film ‘Meg’ once again pen an equally tight screenplay based on Steve Allen’s novel ‘The Trench’. There is a fixed pattern of films made on terrible creatures, in which they suddenly come into a life laughing and then the lives of all other people get connected with this life. What develops as a personal disaster turns into a communal tragedy and the hero finally manages to escape from this aggressive creature. But, even this familiar pattern becomes interesting when the author takes the story through surprising twists and turns. The emotions of the characters come in handy in such situations and if the director makes proper use of his bird’s eye view in presenting the destructive form of nature on the screen, then the film becomes interesting.
The film rests on the shoulders of Jason Statham
If seen in the cast, the film belongs entirely to Jason Statham. He has his own different style of talking and always being patient and serious. He remains focused on the problem in front of him. Here also he says that there can be many challenges, but if what is seen in front is overcome first, then it becomes better to face the subsequent challenge. The film ‘Meg 2’ is made with the money of Chinese Media Capital (CMC) and hence to make the film popular among the Chinese audience, the famous hero Wu Jing has also been taken in the film. Wu Jing may not have shown heroics like Jason in the film, but his character plays a big role in maintaining the tension in the story.
Sophia as Meiyang and Cliff Curtis as Mack keep the flow of the film ‘Meg 2’ moving. Paige Kennedy in the comical character of DJ does a fine job of reducing the tension. Apart from screenplay, acting, direction, the technical team of the film has also done a good job. The film’s special effects are spectacular and some of the shark attack sequences are truly chilling, especially the sequence shot early in the film to establish their size. Apart from the director, the cinematographer and editor of the previous film are also absent from ‘Meg 2’ and due to this some of the underwater sequences lose their grip. Especially the scenes of attempts to reach the laboratory on foot under the sea. The music is by the same Harry Gregson Williams who contributed a lot to the thrill last time. Movie ‘Meg 2’ is this week’s entertainer for thrill, speed and water loving audience.
